How to deal with the desire for sweets

Do you have a desire for sweets?

When you feel that you desire something sweet, it might be a signal that your body lacks or has a need for other important nutrients, such as magnesium, zinc or chromium. These nutrients are present in spinach, chickpeas, beans, onions and tomatoes. The body rarely “screams for” greens and beans, but we are good at giving the body energy through unhealthy stuff like chocolate and sweets, when the body asks for it….

Mental imbalance

Stress, inner unrest, bad or little sleep are all reasons for the desire for something sweet. These reasons lead to increased need for nutrients like chromium and magnesium, which in these situations are excreted from the body more than normally. This leads to imbalance in the brain’s signal substances, which further may lead to increased desire for sweets.

Generally speaking, desire for sweets is a result of both physical and psychological factors. A balanced intake of healthy food will lead to hormone balance and less desire for sweets. It is also important to get enough and good sleep during the night (7-9 hours). Physical activity is an important factor for the physical health as such, but also for mastering stress and reduction of inner unrest.

How to eat?

There is no 100% correct answer on this question, since we are so different. However, what and how you eat may significantly influence the desire for sweets. It is partly a result of how meals are distributed throughout the day, and partly a result of what kind of proteins, carbohydrates and fat acids you are consuming. The desire for sweets is often related to fluctuations in the blood sugar level. This may be caused by genetical factors, but may also be caused by wrong nutrition or unregular meals. To maintain a stable blood sugar level, it is recommended to eat frequently and not so much every time, rather than having few and big meals. As a part of this, meals should contain some proteins, as this gives a feeling of satiety and prevents increase in the blood sugar level.

Therefore we recommend a balanced intake of nutrition , by less sugar, slow carbohydrates, enough proteins and healthy types of fat, for all the meals during the day.

Fancy chocolate?


I believe everybody have felt the desire for chocolate, and most people have this feeling quite often. This may be a sign that you need magnesium. Chocolate contains magnesium, which is also contained in vegetables, peas and other legumes. The desire for chocolate is often due to the need for quick energy, which is something magnesium assists to build. Chocolate gives quick “energy boosts”. Vegetables need more time to build up the energy. However, in the long run,it is more beneficial to regularly consume food that is rich on magnesium.

Fancy french fries or chips?

If you have a desire for something fat, like french fries and chips, it can be because you are very hungry, but it can also be because you are psychologically exhausted. Fat can then give a relaxing feeling, and it provides some energy. A better and more healthy solution when you feel weak and have little energy, is to take a walk, enjoy the fresh air, drink water, eat some fruit or maybe have a cup of coffee.


You feel you need sugar?

When you feel that you want sugar or food or drink with sugar content, this is very often a sign that you need zinc or chromium. Onion or tomato can be the solution to satisfying this need and to block the feeling of need for sugar. You can also take zinc and chromium through dietary supplements if the desire for sweets and sugar becomes too strong.


When you feel a desire for something sweet or salty, this is very often a sign that the body needs energy through good nutrition, sleep, stable physical and psychological health, and physical activity. There are a number of factors influencing our bodies, and it can be interesting and exciting to learn to interprete your own needs. Do the best for yourself and your own body!
